What We Are About
As people turn to their PC’s for more and more of their intake of media, both video and audio, the desire and demand for a high quality audio experience is on the rise. There is a lot of technology out there, and some of it has been around for a long time. But to many people, that technology is still out of reach. We at Sondigo think that audio is fun and should be for everyone!
Sondigo designs and markets digital audio PC peripherals and software that make it easy for everyone to enjoy the benefits of digital audio technology. Our flagship product, the Sondigo Sirocco Wireless Audio Bridge solves a growing problem – namely, how do you get all that downloaded music content from your PC, to your home entertainment system (the one with the good speakers) without drilling holes and stringing wires through your house? And what if I don’t use the file fomat or media player that comes with the wireless audio receiver? These things should not be problems, they are part and parcel of the wireless digital age, so we designed the Sirocco as a solution. Now, any application playing any audio in any format can be streamed wirelessly to any set of speakers in your house. You could even have receivers in every room and decide where you want your content to go.
Sondigo will set your audio free.
People
President and Founder, Len Layton
Len Layton was born and grew up on the North coast of New South Wales, on the east coast of Australia. From 1987-1992 he studied at the University of New South Wales in Sydney where he graduated in Electrical Engineering. At the start of his career in audio, Len worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on the development of D-RADIO which was an advanced radio broadcasting system installed in several studios of the ABC around Australia.
In 1995, Len joined small acoustic research instrument-maker Lake DSP Pty. Ltd. as a junior engineer. At Lake, Len participated in applying the company's convolution technology to the creation of a convincing 3D surround sound effect over ordinary headphones.
In 1998, staff from Dolby Laboratories heard a demo of the technology, which was called "Lake Personal Surround" and just a few months later Len had negotiated a deal for Dolby to license the technology from Lake and then in turn license it to companies worldwide. This was the first time that Dolby had licensed a complete package of technology from outside. At Dolby, Lake Personal Surround became Dolby Headphone. Len also conceived of and implemented the application of the technology to in-flight entertainment and this launched in 1998 on Singapore Airlines.
The deal with Dolby raised Lake’s profile substantially and attracted investment into the company, resulting in an IPO for Lake Technology Limited on the Australian Stock Exchange in November 1999. Early in 2000 Len became CEO of the company taking over from founder Brian Conolly.
In 2002, Dolby had made a significant investment in Lake Technology Limited and Len relocated to San Francisco to join them as Director of Account Management, overseeing the relations between Dolby and its licensees worldwide. Len initiated and participated in a significant expansion of Dolby’s relations with companies in Taiwan and mainland China, recognizing their future importance in electronics.
In October 2003, Len left Dolby to become Senior Vice President for North America for Taiwan-based semiconductor company C-Media Electronics. In this capacity Len was instrumental in raising C-Media’s profile in the PC industry and consolidating its technology leadership position, participating in several high profile product launches with Intel and Dolby in 2004 and 2005.
In late 2004, Len relocated his young family to British Columbia and established Layton Electronics and Networking Limited (LENL) in early 2005.
