Im planning to use the sondigo callisto as soundcard for a creative HQ2300d decoder to get Dolby headphone as well.
If I use the equalizer within the software to get more bass, treble etc does that somehow affect the dolby decoding i.e make the sound worse - or "not dolby"?
Sorry if this is a daft question but I read somewhere that when one wants to pass dolby through DSP should be turned off...
Appriciate if you could help!

Hi Martin, The EQ is really
Hi Martin,
The EQ is really just there to allow you to add or subtract anything you'd like from the audio output. Some audio purists would advocate keeping the EQ off, but if you would like to add some bass, that's exactly what it's there for.
The EQ won't mess with the Dolby output at all, so the best rule of thumb is to use it in a way that you think sounds the best.
Hope this helps,
Aaron

I'm using the HQ2300d decoder with this card successfully!
I wonder if you might be referring to the fact that when a pre-encoded dolby signal (such as a DVD signal) is passed through, the DSP *is* bypassed. That's true even for the Callisto, I think (?).
On the other hand, for live sources such as games, the driver needs to do the encoding itself, and adding some effects, such as bass boost, can hardly have a great impact on sound quality.
That, right, thanks for the
That, right, thanks for the distinction, mini. If the signal being fed to the driver is Dolby Digital already, the EQ will not have any effect.

Thanks for the prompt reply, but..
I still don't get it (still daft..)
Say if I watch a DVD with dolby digital signal precoded and want to pass the signal; will I be able to get more bass and still keep the dolby format.
I didn't understand the "..the EQ will have not have any effect."
Does it mean "EQ not work" or "EQ not affect the signal"?
(By the way I'm impressed by the speed of response on this forum - quite amazing!!)
"EQ will not have any
"EQ will not have any effect" in this case means that the Dolby Digital signal will not pass through the EQ at all. The EQ in the driver will only be "hooked up" if it's regular audio passing through (not DD or DTS).
Most software DVD players also have EQs or treble/bass controls- this is done before the Dolby Digital encoding, so that's what I would recommend using in your case.
Hope that clears it up a bit.

Perfectly clear now!
Thanks a lot Aaron!
