Very basic question here:
I'm using my computer as an HTPC. The only surround speakers i have are being driven by my on board sound card. Now that i have a HD cable box, I want to connect it's 5.1 audio into the computer, and then have it go out through my computer speakers. Can i use this card's s/pdif input to do this?
Thanks.

I'm not aware of anything that can do real-time DD decoding. Unfortunately, DD decoding isn't really mainstream on PCs yet (except in software DVD players).
Is there some sort of 3rd
Is there some sort of 3rd party patch/software/registry workaround, such that the Inferno can decode DD? ;)

Hi Tim,
That's right, the Inferno can't decode DD bitstreams. It is a bit of a patent issue, as the DD decoder needs to be licensed from Dolby separately from the encoder (at extra cost).

Preamp
Hi Aaron,
I was looking to use an (older) computer as a Dolby Digital preamp. This is why the inferno sounded so interesting giving the quality of the analog outputs. If I understand correctly though the card cannot decode Dolby Digital bitsteam from say a DVD player, correct? Is this something that could be enabled or is there patent issues?
Thanks! Tim
Hi, You can certainly use
Hi,
You can certainly use the SPDIF in on the Inferno, but if the cable box is outputting Dolby Digital or DTS format (as it likely is if the output is 5.1), please be aware that the Inferno can not decode these bitstream formats.
You could send pass the signal through to the Inferno's SPDIF out, and then feed a decoder (like an AV receiver).
Hope this helps,
Aaron
