I dont know if anyone else is having this problem or not but I have connected my PS3 to the optical in of the soundcard. I have set the PS3 to output 24/48khz PCM and disabled any of the DD, AC3 outputs. Whenever i play movies and such, you hear pops and crackles and its not even at the peaks of sound, it will pop and crackle even turing quiet scenes. Thinking it was a PS3 problem, I hooked up a cd player that outputs optical, i get the same thing.
I have set the card as thus:
Windows XP Pro 32bit
Latest drivers from this site (20078030)
5.1 speakers
SPDIF off (no loop back)
SPDIF in set as monitoring
using DTS encoding to make the SPDIF signal from 2ch to 5.1
In addition, compared to the drivers (dated 20060802), the card no longer processes the signal through the equalizer before outputting it. Even changing from DDII or to DTS NEO dosen't change anything which in my mind indicates that it is not doing any processing and just passing the signal straight through to the speakers. Sources that are internal to the PC (playing mp3, games, dvds from the pc) are processed by the equalizer and either DTS NEO and DDII before being outputted.
Also, is there a reason why you cant adjust the volume for the spdif input? My friend's creative card allows for it so i was wondering if that was just a driver/hardware limitation.
Thanks

Bump.. Anyone have any ideas
Bump..
Anyone have any ideas to this problem?
Are you able to get rid of
Are you able to get rid of the noises by fiddling with other settings in the control panel?
When you say you're using DTS processing to go up to 5.1, you mean DTS Neo:PC, not DTS Interactive, right?
with all the options turned
with all the options turned off it still gave me the crackeling.
I also played with the sampling option that is in the sounds option of windows. no change.
i completly uninstalled the drivers and then reinstalled it (20070830) and now it works for a little while (1-2 hours) then the noises come back again. and other times, the crackle is noticable instantly. a reboot of the machine sometimes fixes it temproaraly for a while before it comes back, other times a reboot fixes nothing.
answering the DTS question, yes, DTS Neo:PC is being used. But please realize that even with it on or off or using DD PLII, it does nothing to the audio that comes from SPDIF in. and like i noted earlier, the equalizer settings also do not effect the SPDIF in sound when it is outputted to PC 5.1 analog speakers.
Do you get the crackling for
Do you get the crackling for other streams that originate from the PC (Windows Media Player, iTunes, etc)? Or does that just happen with the SPDIF in signals?
Only for SPDIF. If I were to
Only for SPDIF.
If I were to use Winamp or Media Player, I don't have the problem.
Here's another driver from
Here's another driver from earlier this year for you to try (XP only):

Thanks!
I'll give this a try and let you know.
Same thing.
This driver also has the crackeling when using SPDIF.
My only guess at this point
My only guess at this point is that your SPDIF in jack is faulty, causing the crackling. I'd recommend contacting your place of purchase for a refund/replacement.
I have the same problem when
I have the same problem when running my Xbox 360 thru SPDIF-IN.After about an hour or so I start getting crackling/Echoing & complete sound dropouts.I play thru it,it cures itself & repeats the problem within the hour.I haven't tried replacing the stock fiber optic cable yet,I have a monstercable but I don't really want to venture into the snakes pit to dig it out.Are you using the cable that was supplied with the card?
Hi CaveDweller, In your case
Hi CaveDweller,
In your case I don't think it is the SPDIF jack or cable that are at fault, since the crackling is only happening intermittently. Do you get the same problem when feeding a signal from another device through the SPDIF input?
As I had menchined in
As I had menchined in another post,Im in vista 64 now & I have no more crackling or sound droppouts. But I'll hookup a DVD player to my SPDIF-IN over the weekend & see what happens under XP.
I RMA'ed the card from where
I RMA'ed the card from where I bought it and got a replacement. I went through the gamut of drivers and I am still seeing the problem.
As for the fiber, I've tried both the one supplied with the box as well as a 3rd party cable and I still experience the crackle. I have tried with various SPDIF sources.
Although now, it is somewhat intermittent if I used the newest drivers that Aaron posted in another thread. But it also comes with the second issue of no DTS:Neo, PLII, or equalization.
Desperate, I tried using the analog input, and to my suprise, the crackle is apperent there as well, not as often, but it happens. I first thought it was because the signal was too high, but it is line level and I even tried using signal filters that I had lying around to bring it down 3db to see if it would fix it it didn't. It even crackeled when there was no sound at all... not sure how that works. I dont know if that brings up a seperate issue all on its own or not but i thought it was worth mentioning. Again, i used multiple sources.
Well, this does shed new
Well, this does shed new light on the problem. Just to clarify, this crackling is only on input signals, correct? ie. output from audio applications works fine?
It is clearly not a SPDIF jack, cable, or input signal problem. Instead, it's most likely that the drivers and your PC are not seeing eye to eye. Perhaps try a registry clean to see if that resolves the conflict (try ccleaner, which is free). You can also try using a different PCI slot, or changing your IRQ settings if you're comfortable with that.
