Belkin N1 router reboots after every 5 minutes of streaming

Driver: 2.1.0 with matching firmware.
Router: Belkin N1 wireless (F5D8231-4; hardware version 1001; latest firmware)
Wireless NIC: D-Link DWA-652 (N)

The reboots happen predictably, although, strangely, only after 5 minutes of *uninterrupted* streaming. Stopping and restarting manually within the 5-minute window resets it.

Note:

- The reboots also occur with another wireless NIC, namely one built into a two-year-old Sony VAIO laptop. In contrast, streaming from a *wired* PC does not cause the reboots; however, after about 10 mins. the buffer fill rate drops to around 70+% and stays there.

- The router has only 1, backwards-compatible standards mode, and even with the most conservative settings (20Mhz bandwidth; protected mode on) the problem persists.

- The problem did NOT occur with the first-generation firmware.

Unfortunately, I had too many 'stutters' with the original firmware, and the original driver's dynamic switching did not work properly (which, incidentally, also seems broken in the v2.6 beta), so going back is not an option.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Michael, There is no

Hi Michael,
There is no reason why the Sirocco should cause a router to reset itself. Have you tried an older version of the router's firmware?

Hi, Aaron: Yes, I have. In

Hi, Aaron:

Yes, I have. In fact, I first ran into the problem with the old firmware version, and specifically updated to the latest to see if it fixed the problem.

Michael

I have the exactly same problem.

I, too, use the Belkin N1 router. I have the same problem. I have tried all the possible combinations of the setting for the router, but it didn't work. So, when I use Soricco, I have to use my old Surecom which was supposed to retire. But, I still have a problem with Surecom, which is a kind of buffer issue...which was reported by another user in the forum.

Happy to hear that a newer version of firmware/driver is going to release soon. And, hope to work with my setting this time.

Hey guys,
Here is the latest driver and firmware (not yet officially released). Let me know if it helps.

Thanks, I will try them.

As for the router:
I have since replaced the Belkin with a D-Link DIR-655, which has received many positive reviews and boasts good multimedia streaming performance.

While it does not exhibit the reboot problem, it doesn't work satisfactorily either. Operating in mixed mode (802.11n/g/b) resulted in frequent buffer issues. I am now running it in 802.11b mode only (which I obviously don't want to do long-term), and while things are better, they are not good.

Do you have recommendations for this particular router? It features customizable QoS prioritization rules, which I haven't played with yet.
Can they be used? The Sirocco doesn't use UDP or TCP connections, does it?

the newer version

Hi Aron,

I've just spent 2 hours to test the newer verion. This is the results I've got.
1) It still has the same problem with Belkin N1. The first 10 mins was ok, but after that it lost the connection again.
2) However, it is working perfectly fine with my Surecom (a very old model). The buffer level stays high most of time. It is a lot better than before. I started to like Soricco, finally.

I'd like to recommend one of your engineers to talk to Belkin to find out a solution.

thanks & regards,

I would also very much

I would also very much welcome a solution to the Belkin problem, since the only reason I bought the D-Link router (for now) was its incompatibility with the Sirocco.

I have spent an hour or so testing the new firmware/driver--with the D-Link router only. I've had 2 complete dropouts (buffer went to zero), although only for a few tenth of a second each. (I also played around with 'stealing' the connection back and forth between two machines, which seemed to work fine, as did the dynamic audio switching.)

Thanks,

Michael

Frankly, I don't know what

Frankly, I don't know what we could do that would fix the Belkin crashing problem. A router should never crash based on the traffic that it is passing, and since this appears to be isolated to this router model, it appears the problem is not with our code.

I'm glad to hear that the new driver/firmware helped. Let me know if you run into any problems with it, you're our first outside beta testers!

I agree that data should

I agree that data should never make a router crash.

While is there probably nothing to fix on your end, you could help Belkin solve the problem by helping them track down the problem. I am aware, however, that, given the size of the Sirocco market, that may not be realistic.
But merely letting them know along with some background info wouldn't take much, and--who knows--the underlying problem in this case just may be the cause of trouble elsewhere in their product.

Problems confirmed

I can confirm ck's findings: the new firmware still crashes the Belkin N1 router, after about 10 minutes this time.
